James West receives Spark Award for Undergraduate Research

Thanks to a generous endowment created by Michael H. and Nancy E. Scarbrough, the Department of Linguistics was able to offer funding to support undergraduate research projects.

James West, an undergraduate student studying Linguistics and Computer Science, is our first recipient to receive the Spark Award for Undergraduate Research in Linguistics for his project - "A Lexical-Functional Grammar for the Irish Language."

Dot-Eum (Rachel) Kim admitted to Candidacy

Congratulations to Dot-Eum (Rachel) Kim for successfully defending her QP2 entitled “Korean Americans: [+back] on the B/OW/T”. Rachel’s committee was impressed with her solid and compelling research regarding the speech of Korean Americans in Georgia. This is indeed innovative and novel work that will no doubt be proceeded by lots more interesting findings. She has now been admitted to candidacy!

Mike Olsen receives Dissertation Completion Award

Congratulations to Linguistics Ph.D. Candidate, Mike Olsen, for being selected to receive a Graduate School Dissertation Completion Award for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The Dissertation Completion Awards are designed to assist doctoral students who are writing their dissertations by enabling students to concentrate solely on research and writing.

Recipients are selected through a competitive process, and awards are made to students who demonstrate superior academic performance and research productivity and who are likely to become leaders in their fields.
