Thanks to a generous endowment created by Michael H. and Nancy E. Scarbrough, the Department of Linguistics was able to offer funding to support undergraduate research projects.

James West, an undergraduate student studying Linguistics and Computer Science, is our first recipient to receive the Spark Award for Undergraduate Research in Linguistics for his project - "A Lexical-Functional Grammar for the Irish Language."

Congratulations to Dot-Eum (Rachel) Kim for successfully defending her QP2 entitled “Korean Americans: [+back] on the B/OW/T”. Rachel’s committee was impressed with her solid and compelling research regarding the speech of Korean Americans in Georgia. This is indeed innovative and novel work that will no doubt be proceeded by lots more interesting findings. She has now been admitted to candidacy!

Congratulations to Linguistics Ph.D. Candidate, Mike Olsen, for being selected to receive a Graduate School Dissertation Completion Award for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The Dissertation Completion Awards are designed to assist doctoral students who are writing their dissertations by enabling students to concentrate solely on research and writing.

Recipients are selected through a competitive process, and awards are made to students who demonstrate superior academic performance and research productivity and who are likely to become leaders in their fields.

It's Honors Week here at UGA. This is a time where we recognize our best and brightest students. We would like to congratulate Bailey Bigott for receiving the Presidential Award of Excellence and Garrett Klawuhn for being recognized as a First Honors Graduate!

Congratulations to Linguistics doctoral student, Kit Callaway, for successfully defending their 2nd qualifying paper entitled "A Wise Man Always Watches Their Words: Acceptability Variation in Singular They" and being admitted to candidacy!

Two Linguistics doctoral students receive 2019 Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award!

Andrew Bray received the award for his teaching assistance in the Department of Linguistics and Dot-Eum Kim received the award for her teaching assistance in the Department of Comparative Literature.

The University of Georgia Department of Linguistics hosted Dr. William Matchin, Assistant Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Carolina, for a guest lecture on March 6, 2020. The title of the presentation was "The cortical organization of syntax."

The University of Georgia Department of Linguistics hosted Dr. Masaya Yoshida, Associate Professor of Linguistics at Northwestern University, for a guest lecture on February 28, 2020. The title of the presentation was "Syntactic Prediction in Online Sentence processing."

All students are invited to attend the free Discovery Showcase for Majors, Minors, Certificate Programs and Double Dawgs Pathway program. The Discovery Showcase seeks to guide students on their major and career paths at UGA.
