Requirements for the A.B. in Linguistics
(Note: Official degree requirements are listed in the UGA Bulletin. The requirements for the Linguistics major are described here for your convenience, but in case of any discrepancy the information in the official UGA Bulletin always takes precedence over information given on the departmental website.)
General Education Core Curriculum
During their first years of post-secondary study, whether at UGA itself, at another campus of the University System of Georgia, or at another university, students should pursue completion of the General Education Core Curriculum requirements.
We recommend that Linguistics majors take STAT 2000 Introductory Statistics or STAT 2100H Introduction to Statistics and Computing (Honors) to satisfy Core Area III, Quantitative Reasoning. The Linguistics major does not specify any preferred or required courses in Areas I, II, IV, or V.
Students majoring in Linguistics must complete the following requirements for Core Area VI, Major-Related Courses:
LING 2100 or LING 2100H The Study of Language
Competency in one modern foreign language through the fourth semester of study and competency in a second modern foreign language through the second semester. At least one of these should be a non-Indo-European language. (See the list here of languages offered at UGA for more information.)
Choose additional hours to fulfill Area VI from the following 1000/2000-level courses:
AFST (ANTH) (CMLT) (GEOG) (HIST) (SOCI) 2100, AMHA, ANTH, ARAB, ARTI, CHNS, CLAS, CMLT, ENGL, FREN, GEOG 1101 or GEOG 2010H-2010D, GEOG 1125 or GEOG 2250H-2250D, GREK, GRMN, HNDI, INDO, ITAL, JPNS, KREN, LATN, MAND, PERS, PHIL, PORT, RELI, ROML, RUSS, SCAN, SLAV, SPAN, SPCM, SWAH, TURK, URDU, VIET, YORB, ZULU
Franklin College Requirements
In addition to completing the UGA Core Curriculum requirements and University-wide degree requirements, recipients of degrees from the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences are expected to satisfy specific Franklin College requirements. Note that any courses used to fulfill major requirements, general electives, or the Core Curriculum may simultaneously satisfy Franklin requirements.
Major requirements: 8 courses (24 hours)
Required courses (to be taken as soon as possible after completion of LING 2100/2100H and declaration of major):
LING 3060 Phonetics and Phonology
LING 3150 Generative Syntax
Choose two courses from the following list:
LING (ENGL) 3020 Language Variation
LING 3250 Morphology
LING 3830 Languages of the World
LING 4160 Compositional Semantics
LING (ENGL) 4170 Second Language Acquisition
LING 4690 Historical Linguistics
LING 4710 Languages in Contact

*LING (CMSD) 3120 Study of Language Development OR

Choose any four additional LING courses at the 3000/4000-level.

Transfer Students
It will normally be the case that the Undergraduate Admissions Office will not be able to assign appropriate equivalents in UGA courses for Linguistics courses taken at other universities. Students should consult the Director to try to obtain accurate transfer assignments for Linguistics courses taken at other universities.
Students who transfer to UGA and who wish to major in Linguistics will be expected to satisfy UGA Core and major requirements, even if the institution from which they are transferring did not offer some of the courses we require. Transfer students who cannot complete the major requirements by the time that they achieve enough credits to graduate must still satisfy the major course requirements, even though it means that they will have more than enough credits to graduate.
Transfer credits may be used to satisfy UGA major and minor requirements in two ways: 1) if a course has transferred as equivalent to a UGA course, students may use that course to satisfy any requirement that the same course taken at UGA would satisfy; 2) if a course has transferred as LING elective credit, the course may be used to satisfy the requirement for an elective course in Linguistics, not as a replacement for a course specified under particular requirements.

Advising
Students are normally advised by a Franklin College advisor until they have declared a major and have accumulated 60 hours of course credit. Students with 60+ credit hours and a declared major in Linguistics will be advised by the Program Director. Contact Ms. Loretta Wheatley (lwheatle@uga.edu) or 542-5099 to set up an appointment.
