Zlata Liwschin, a visiting research scholar from Leibniz Universität Hannover, will be presenting a talk titled “Grammaticalization of Aspect in German and its diachronic parallels in English."

Abstract: Aspect is a grammatical category that is currently being discussed as grammaticalizing in German. In English, this process had already taken place during the Early Modern English period with the obligatorification of the -ing progressive. What are the similarities between the two languages in the way they grammaticalize the category of aspect? What are the similarities between the progressives in the two languages in the way they emerged?
