Advanced Generative Syntax

The investigation of English syntax and the development of a theory of generative transformational grammar begun in Generative Syntax. This course expands the range of constructions covered (now including Wh-questions and relative clauses) and focuses on a universal phrase structure system called X-bar Theory rather than language-specific rules.

Dr. John Hale joins the UGA Department of Linguistics

We are very happy to announce the appointment of Dr. John Hale as the Arch Professor of World Languages and Cultures in the Department of Linguistics. Dr. Hale received his Sc.B. degree from Brown University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. His work centers on fundamental questions of language comprehension, which he investigates through cognitive modeling using computer simulations.
