Dr. John Hale joins the UGA Department of Linguistics

We are very happy to announce the appointment of Dr. John Hale as the Arch Professor of World Languages and Cultures in the Department of Linguistics. Dr. Hale received his Sc.B. degree from Brown University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. His work centers on fundamental questions of language comprehension, which he investigates through cognitive modeling using computer simulations.

A Finite-state Introduction to Computational Linguistics

Introduces finite-state automata as both a theoretical framework as well as a practical tool for phonetics, (morpho)phonology, and (certain aspects of) syntax. Students will learn to use software toolkits for linguistic analysis and how to work with natural-language corpora.

Introduction to the field of neurolinguistics. Examining the neural basis of human language, the course relates data from techniques like neuroimaging and electrophysiology to computational models across multiple levels of analysis, including phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.

Vanessa Swenson has been accepted as a 2018-2019 Fellow in the Future Faculty Fellows Program. Sponsored jointly by the UGA Graduate School and the Center for Teaching and Learning, 3FP is a yearlong professional development program that brings together 15 innovative and dedicated teaching assistants from across campus to talk about, reflect upon, and improve their teaching, while preparing them for the academic job market and the rigors of their first faculty positions.
