We are very happy to announce the appointment of Dr. John Hale as the Arch Professor of World Languages and Cultures in the Department of Linguistics. Dr. Hale received his Sc.B. degree from Brown University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. His work centers on fundamental questions of language comprehension, which he investigates through cognitive modeling using computer simulations.

LING 4530/6530

A Finite-state Introduction to Computational Linguistics
Credit Hours:
3.0

Introduces finite-state automata as both a theoretical framework as well as a practical tool for phonetics, (morpho)phonology, and (certain aspects of) syntax. Students will learn to use software toolkits for linguistic analysis and how to work with natural-language corpora.

Prerequisites:
Undergraduate: LING 3060 or LING(ENGL) 3150 or LING 3150W
Graduate: POD

LING 3350

Language, Mind, and Brain
Credit Hours:
3.0

Introduction to the field of neurolinguistics. Examining the neural basis of human language, the course relates data from techniques like neuroimaging and electrophysiology to computational models across multiple levels of analysis, including phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.

Prerequisites:
LING 2100 or LING 2100E or LING 2100H
Semester Offered:
Fall
Level:

LCUGA5

The Linguistics Society at UGA is excited to announce the 5th Annual Linguistics Conference at UGA, coming this October 12–13! Join us for an interdisciplinary conference focused on "Language in the Margins," with plenary speakers Dr. Salikoko Mufwene, University of Chicago, and Dr. Donna Jo Napoli, Swarthmore College.

Vanessa Swenson accepted to Future Faculty Fellows Program

Close up portrait of graduate student Vanessa Swenson

Vanessa Swenson has been accepted as a 2018-2019 Fellow in the Future Faculty Fellows Program. Sponsored jointly by the UGA Graduate School and the Center for Teaching and Learning, 3FP is a yearlong professional development program that brings together 15 innovative and dedicated teaching assistants from across campus to talk about, reflect upon, and improve their teaching, while preparing them for the academic job market and the rigors of their first faculty positions.

Visiting Lecture with Dr. Bryan Gick

Dr. Bryan Gick

Dr. Bryan Gick visited UGA to give a lecture on concatenation and coarticulation in embodied speech. Dr. Gick's research focuses on understanding the physical mechanisms of speech production and their interations with perception, phonology, and phonetics in normal, disordered, and children's speech across languages. His talk was co-funded by Linguistics and AI.

Support Linguistics at UGA

Your donations to the Department of Linguistics will support research and travel opportunities for students and faculty and other initiatives to enhance students' education in linguistics. Please consider joining other friends and alumni who have shown their support by making a gift to our fund. We greatly appreciate your contributions to the success of our programs!

EVERY DOLLAR CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEPARTMENT HAS A DIRECT IMPACT ON OUR STUDENTS AND FACULTY.
